Dear Rocky,
There is no way in hell you will remember me. I'll get to that in a minute.
First, who I am. My name is Brian Douglas Ahern and I have been a professional published cartoonist since 1991. A fellow Muskegonite (Mona Shores grad, sorry), I began working in my chosen field after graduating from Kendall College of Art and Design in 1991.
To verify that I'm not a big phony, search my full name, or check out back issues of The Comics Buyer's Guide, Wizard, or Inquest Gamer where my work has seen print. Or go to www.prismcomics.org or www.theispot.com and search under the creators listings for my name.
So anyway, I am presently at work pursuing a number of dream projects, specifically superhero comic books featuring my own character creations. One in particular is a courageous and complex man in his mid twenties with a hi-tech suit or armor, wings of pure energy, a huge secret, and a very good best friend who keeps him grounded.
Rocky, you inspired the character of this hero's best friend.
In my imagination, I see you as I write the character of "Mac". Now, I have no idea if my comic book will ever see print, if any publisher will be interested. But I wanted you to know, as you rise to fame, that you inspired this character in my comics well before you even appeared as "The Boy" in Shallow Ground. Hell, before you stunt-doubled for Tobey Maguire.
(That, and I realize if the comic does get picked up, and it--God willing--ever became a big-budget comic book movie, by that time you'll probably be so darn famous I won't be able to afford you to play Mac, so I figured I'd better tell you about it now.)
In any case, that's it. You inspired me. Oh, yeah-and when was this? When you were waiting tables at the City Cafe. I swear I am not kidding. I wasn't even in your section, either! It was at dinner before a show at the Frauenthal, and as you went about your tasks on the job, you had so much energy, so much focus, such a positive aura about you--to say nothing of your good looks--that you really caught my attention and sparked my imagination. I actually said to my dinner companions, "Man, I want to work with that kid some day!" They looked at me as if I was crazy. Later, when I pointed you out on a Sci-Fi Channel showing of one of your movies, I jeered at them, "See? That's him! That's Rocky from the City Cafe that one time!!"
Again, they looked at me as if I were crazy.
Perhaps I am. But you are an inspiration anyway, Rocky. When the comic book is complete, I'll be sure to send an exclusive copy to your agent so you can read it.
Keep pursuing your dreams, Rocky. Keep being a hero.
Very best wishes always,
-Briz
