Plot: Set in the Vietnam War, a group of soldiers are brought in to aid an existing group in the hunt and removal of any enemy combatants that are using the dugout tunnels in the jungle to wage war. In these tightly fitted tunnels the US troops are out of the element as the Vietnam soldiers lie in wait for the unsuspecting soldiers.
Stars: Michael Pare, Rocky Marquette, Wilson Bethel, Jane Le.
Director: Uwe Boll
My Thoughts:
“The movie that had potential and went nowhere”
I really wanted to like this, but I simply could not, Uwe Boll like always never puts enough depth into his scripts. In this you have so many main characters who simply are not developed enough to do them justice, and even what little development there is, is minor – A few stories of home here and there. Had he focused on simply a few maybe we could have warmed up to them more.
The plot is never truly explained; are the soldiers simply there because of there deployment, or was this specific mission. To me it was like let’s set up camp and go hunting; (Maybe this was the case – but explaining this would have helped) There was never no hint at a tactic beyond lets clear a tunnel, which understandably is what these specific soldiers were there for but again not enough detail.
The Tunnels themselves were also never given a real explanation also; which would help someone who was unaware of such things in the war. I must admit (ashamedly) that I was unaware of these types of tactics being used in the war before doing research about the film.
The action was impressive and sometimes quite graphic (War scene violence), but being that they were intercut between the Tunnel Scenes it kind of lost its impact after a while.
I’m glad I watched the film mostly because Rocky was in it, but I don’t think I could bring myself to watch it again. I again have to go back to skipping over Uwe boll films.
Rocky’s Role: Playing the part of Private Terence Verano, a new recruit who like most of the boys does not want to be there. Rocky has the most screen time devoted to his character development which was a treat, however there was so much more that could have been done with him.
Rocky's acting was really impressive; all the emotions that were need he conveyed on screen every time - from the laughter to the fear. He always was a great actor but you can see him perfecting it more so now.
