I had a wonderful Easter holiday. I enjoyed dinner at the home of a friend from church, and dinner was grand—ham, augratin potatoes, home-baked biscuits, fruit cups.
One of the guests was my friend's adult daughter, named Sarah Bowman. "You know", my friend told me, knowing of my predilection toward movies and the actors of same, "Sarah knows Rocky Marquette."
"No, really?", I asked. Sure enough, she did. Sarah is a teacher now, but she remembers her time in school here, and how Rocky was a drum major for the Reeths-Puffer Rockets for three years. Evidently, he's still quite an enthusiast for competitive drum core productions. According to Sarah he had quite a flair for it.
Locally, we have a huge event each spring called Student Showcase, where gifted students of all fields (song, dance, band, writing, artwork, etc.) take to the stage of our largest theater, the aforementioned Frauenthal Center For the Performing Arts and put on a show like none other. I think it runs for something like two to three days. I always seem to find out about the event after it's already happened. "Did you see this year's Showcase last week?" "What? It was last week?? No, I didn't see it...grumble...grumble..."
In any case, one year our man Rocky got an honorable mention for a solo acting routine. He came onstage in a straight jacket and performed a monolgue as a man committed to an asylum. I'm told it was impressive. And I told Sarah that it was good to hear of yet another performance where Rocky didn't get a fist punched through his chest.
The more I think I know all of Rocky's back-story and adventures prior to hitting the big screen, the more I find that there's still lots yet to discover. Let's hope we keep right on discovering that.
